In 2022, the Arizona State Legislature for the first time in 20 years made major changes to laws on spousal maintenance (aka alimony and spousal support), elective September 24, 2022. The relevant portion of Senate Bill 1383 reads: “The supreme court shall establish guidelines for determining and awarding spousal maintenance.”
The court then established a “subcommittee to study and recommend statewide spousal maintenance guidelines” and issued an emergency administrative order guiding the determination of spousal maintenance until the anticipated adoption of the guidelines in June for a period of one year. During the year, data and public comments will be solicited to determine whether further changes to the guidelines are necessary.
